Corrosion protection

Corrosion is the term used to describe the way metal surfaces are affected by oxygen, water or acids. Iron or steel rusting is a well-known example. Rust weakens the metal and is a problem for metal pipes and components that are continually in contact with external elements such as air, water (salt water in particular) or liquids with a low pH.

We apply protective layers to metals to counteract corrosion. This coating ensures that the lifespan of components is considerably increased, which cuts your costs. The anti-corrosion protective coating that we apply depends on the application. For example, drinking water pipes have to comply with strict quality requirements that are checked and certified as per the Kiwa, DVGW/KTW and WICS Assessment Guidelines.

FAQ

Kersten applies plastic coatings using thermal processes. The main coatings are:

  • Rilsan®, biobased Nylon 11
  • Resicoat®, epoxy
  • Halar®, Fluoropolymer ECTFE
  • Xylan®, Fluoropolymers, PTFE, FEP and PFA
  • Other Fluoropolymers including ETFE
  • Abcite®, thermoplastic
On daily base we help our customers with adequate solutions or new developments regarding plastic coatings and the way we can apply them best.

With a great diversity in coatings solutions can be offed in the areas of:

  • Corrosion protection
  • Hygiene
  • Non-stick solutions
  • UV resistance
  • Elastic coatings
  • Conductive or insulating coatings
  • Kiwa and food safety certified coatings
  • Wear resistant coatings
  • Chemical resistance

Corrosion is damage to a (metal) surface due to various influences. The rusting of steel is the best known type of corrosion. However other metals, such as stainless steel, can also corrode.

Some examples of metals that can be provided with a plastic coating:

  • Carbon steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminium
  • Brass
  • Titan
  • Cast iron

Our coatings are applied using thermal processes. For the application of the various coatings it is necessary to heat the metals. This can be done before or after applying the coatings.

By protecting metals against corrosion their lifetime can be extended and costs can be saved. Our fluoropolymers also ensure that in addition to corrosion protection, the surfaces will be more easy to clean due to the non-stick properties.
